The Historian

This is Jason posting.

I recently finished the book, “The Historian” by Elizabeth Kostova.  I was intrigued by the summary.  It was a good read.  The story is about the hunt for Dracula by tracking him through history.  The book makes use of many historical references about the history of the Turks, Byzantine empire, Vlad the Impaler and many others.  There are also lots of wonderful descriptions of the countryside and cities in Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey, Eastern and Western Europe.  The time span is set after WWII.  The book brought back memories of doing research before the usage of the internet.  I remember looking through those little card catalogs at the library!  It was really interesting reading about the clash of Western Catholics and the Eastern Islamics in the ancient times.  Overall I liked the suspense that the book builds.  It shows a realistic world with just an edge of the unknown at the corner.  This unknown grows bigger until the confrontation.  I liked her how she wrote a story within a story.  It kept the reader glued to the book to see what happens next.  There could have been more done to the book to keep it from being one dimensional.  It was a good book but I don’t think it was in the same league as say, “The Da Vinci Code.”
